At night, when alone under the stars, far from any light pollution, I could feel the eyes of these elusive creatures on my back as I studied the night sky before making a dash for my tent. In the morning we found their tracks very close to where we were sleeping. Friend or foe, when we are sleeping anything that goes 'bump in the night' is startling regardless of whether it is something real or imagined.
