Sleepless: Art From the Midnight Hour

What keeps you up at night? What scares you? What excites you? What art expresses your inner landscape that is accessed in the intimacy of the nighttime? We can travel to a different world at night in our dreams and awaken our imagination.

The juror for this show is Elizabeth Carefoot  Check out her work at https://www.elizabethcarefoot.com

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, votes are tallied and a People's Choice Award is presented to the deserving winner!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see it  in person during its run from Friday October 4th, 2024 to Sunday November 10th, 2024. CA$250.00

Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 4
Inspiration:: Each spring, I am fortunate to participate in a traditional anagama wood kiln firing on Denman Island. 25 dedicated potters gather to take shifts stoking the kiln, and feeding the group over 4 days and nights. Traditional woodfiring is an art unto itself, and appeals to pottery purists. It is filled with traditions, and techniques, and requires a community of dedicated participants. I love doing the midnight shift, where we keep awake by exchanging knowledge, and experiences in the endless ceramics learning journey. This last spring, as I lay at midnight listening to a pair of owls in the garden, I was inspired to sculpt one for the pending woodfiring weekend. They are an age-old symbol of both wisdom, and of working at night while the rest of the world sleeps. How perfect!
Materials and Process:: Cone 10 stoneware, hand sculpted, black slip scraffito and woodfired.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Fireflies by Owl City

CA$400.00

Dimensions: 17 x 19 x 1
Inspiration:: As I get older, I often think about what happens to my spirit after I leave this planet. When I was sitting at Esquimalt Lagoon one day after my Dad passed and saw a flock of birds lifting off, I captured this image. When I reviewed it at home, they looked like ethereal spirits departing this realm and I thought "That's where I want to go too...where the animals and birds go when it's time to leave this life."
Materials and Process:: Photograph using intentional camera movement, printed on ultra premium photo lustre paper,11 X 13 image matted and framed to 17 X 19 with conservation standard mats and glass. Ltd. Ed. 1 of 8

Dimensions: 14 x 17 x 1

CA$95.00

Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 0.75
Inspiration:: I am so grateful to the farmers who keep Metchosin rural by raising sheep and allowing Metchosin citizens to keep their property rural by grazing sheep in their fields. Loss of habitat is a prime driver in the loss of species diversity across the animal and plant kingdoms. WWF states that the rapid loss of species we are seeing today is estimated by experts to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate. This is not good news.
Materials and Process:: Giclee print on paper
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Big Little Lions' song Here we go Again

Dimensions: 42 x 12 x 0.75

CA$975.00

Dimensions: 14 x 18
Inspiration:: Ever since he can remember Roland has always been a clown; with friends and family, in the classroom or at work, one could say he was always in the midst of it. In maturity, Roland continues to face his haunting inner turmoil by hiding what he does not want the world to see. Masking himself, Roland faces the world, but that can never be enough. Like wisps of fog, his fear of being found is now all around him; on the precipice of discovery Roland contemplates…
Materials and Process:: Pastels on pastelmat
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Clouds / Hugo Kant
